How will the Banana Rate?….According to Google.

In a bid to produce the most utterly pointless, yet compellingly readable post on the internet. I’ve searched Google for all the fruits I could think of and find at Tesco Online to produce the definitive list of “What is the most popular Fruit in the world”.

Method:

  1. These are based upon Google searches with just the fruits name, I used Google UK.
  2. I did consider typing for example “apple fruit” to discount all the many hits Google would return for Apple computers (and ipods) – but in the end I thought no, the fruits impact upon contemporary culture and industry is all part of the popularity rating.
  3. All result are as of 19 July 2010, results can vary by region and time.

And so I give you the top 20, in reverse order. There are a few surprises.

Number 20 – The Pommegranate

With 5,450,000

Sneaking into the top 20, it’s the enigmatic and much underrated Pomegranate – guaranteed to make fruit noobs complain “WTF do I do with all the seeds? I wouldn’t take this from an Orange!”…I think you’re supposed to eat the seeds.

Number 19 – The Grapefruit

With 8,430,000

The fruit has become popular since the late 19th century; before that it was only grown as an ornamental plant. All I know is that I eat them about once a year for breakfast when I’m on a health-kick diet.

Number 18 – The Advocado

With 9,240,000

Technically a large berry that contains a large seed, and yeah a fruit. I like them on Salad, and they make a good Guacamole dip.

Number 17 – The Star-Fruit

With 11,500,000

If it’s a Star Fruit…then it’s a fading Star (Fruit), only number 17 for the coolest shaped fruit in the world.

Number 16 – Raspberry

With 13,600,000

For comedy value alone the Raspberry disserves better than a mere 16th placing, after all nobody ever “blew a Kiwi Fruit”.

Number 15 – Pineapple

With 20,300,000

A shock, only a number 15 for the famous Pineapple!

Number 14 – The Grape

With 22,700,000

Popular in Wine (wine has 197,000,000 hits!) but on it’s own the humble grape only manages 14th spot.

Number 13 – Pear

With 23,900,000

It’s unlucky number 13 for the Pear.

Number 12 – Plum

With 25,100,000

Not so Plum-Lucky, missing out by just a couple of places on the prestigious top ten.

Number 11 – Kiwi Fruit

With 26,400,000

Amazing, the often overlooked Kiwi Fruit beats the Plum and even the Pear to 11th spot, perhaps helped by the New Zealanders.

Number 10 – Mango

With 40,300,000

Breaking into the prestigious top-ten – the Mango? Yeah, I know, I know, Mango? But I think this was helped in Google by certain fashion labels – and perhaps misspellings of Manga.

Number 9 – Peach

With 40,800,000

Just Peachy! Not a bad outing for the Peach who most pundits predicted no better than a top 15 spot.

Number 8 – Tomato

With 40,900,000

Ha! Yes, the Tomato – most people don’t even know it’s a fruit – but it is.

“Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad”

… Peter Kay

Number 7 – Strawberry

With 47,800,000

Where would Wimbledon be without it? Probably still in the South-West London Borough of Merton.

Number 6 – Lime

With 51,800,000

A stronger than expected late finish for the Lime.

And finally we reach the Top 5!

Number 5 – Banana

With 62,900,000

Commonly claimed to be the world’s 3rd most favourite fruit, but not according to Google and Google knows best.

The Bananas place may slip even further if they are granted human-rights, as reported in this campaign:

Human Rights For Bananas

Number 4– Lemon

With 65,000,000

A worthy 4th place for the citric fruit.

Number 3 – Cherry

With 113,000,000

Out of nowhere the Cherry leaps into 3rd spot denying the Lemon and even the Banana! There has been a recount, it ain’t no dream folks – the Cherry really is 3rd.

Number 2 – Orange

With 343,000,000

Claimed to be the world’s 2nd most popular fruit, and Google backs up the claim. Comfortably beating the Cherry with more than 3 times the votes, the Orange looks set to keep 2nd place for a long time to come.

Number 1 – Apple

With 413,000,000

No surprises, dozens of sources had the hardy and adaptable Apple as number one and it doesn’t disappoint, and with a comfortable 20% majority over the promising but ultimately hapless Orange the Apple looks set to stay at number one for a long time to come.

So there it is – the most utterly pointless thing you’ve read on the Internet this year? … I hope so, if it is please leave a comment.

  1. Shaun says:

Apple and Orange have such outstanding hits on google because APPLE = Apple company and ORANGE = orange mobile network.

Has this been taken into consideration? Just curious.

If you look at the method statement point 2 explains this….basically I started off trying to but then decided against it.

  2. Easy says:

I agree with you Shaun, fruit is not pointless at all. If we don’t all get 5 a day then we will die! so it is hardly pointless but very important.
And in this modern age I am sure nectarines are more popular than peaches, cos peaches have that horrible furry skin and its gets stuck in your teeth.
I think the admin should take this kind of poll more seriously.

  3. Sam Bill says:

Try a glass of freshly squeezed juice of oranges mixed with Pomegranates. Its tasty, refreshing in addition to the nutritional values.
